Andre Ward, known for his polished boxing skills, counter-punching, and ability to make his opponent fight in positions they're uncomfortable with (a quote attributed to Roy Jones Jr.).
Sergey Kovalev, known for his fearsome straights and jabs, his tenacity to keep coming forward as the aggressor, and his long history of KOs.
In their re-match, Ward wanted to prove that he had true grit, and wanted to win the respect of boxing fans and Kovalev. Kovalev wanted to dominate, and felt the need to set the record straight about who was the genuinely stronger boxer.
Just saw their second fight last night, and DAMN, it was an absolutely amazing boxing match. Not sure how to talk about this match without spoilers, I'm assuming some of you haven't seen it, since it was a PPV broadcast. It's currently available on HBO's rebroadcast.
All I can say is that you should try to find a way to watch this fight!
Honestly, the first fight was underwhelming compared to the sheer explosiveness of their second match. A lot of fans didn't care for the judges decision in the first fight. I can see both sides of the argument. It felt inconclusive, even if both men put forth a tremendous effort.
The second fight, however, felt much more conclusive. Roy Jones Jr. made some predictions in the early rounds, and it was fascinating to watch the drama unfold.
There was some controversy, too. Some of the punches were thought to be borderline low blows, or punches right on the belt line. The ref didn't see it that way, or didn't believe it was a foul. Personally, I thought one or two punches were borderline low, but the fight was already concluded by that point, as pointed out by Jim Lampley.
Any thoughts and opinions on this fight? Did anyone else see it? What did you think?
