Latest Fedor fight happened yesterday.
Wow. That was awkward. I wasn't really expecting for there to be another fedor fight, and I wasn't anticipating this one, it's kind of pointless. If anything, it was unexpected in how a fight that was probably thought of as a setup for another highlight reel KO got derailed pretty hard. After a few flurries, Fedor walked into a punch and got floored. From then on, the first round was mostly Maldonado GnPing him and Fedor trying to get up while having abysmal defense against the punches. He did and just survived the round. He was barely standing and got into the clinch often where he ate short punches. That was a bit unconfortable to watch and the fight probably could have been stopped a couple of times during the round. Luckily for him, Maldonano kind of punched himself out trying to finish him on the ground and wasn't as dangerous as he may have been when he got back up. Then, it was two rounds of a concussed Fedor boxing with Maldonado and arguably doing a decent enough job. He backed up to the cage often and was tagging him more. Went to the decision, and Fedor won a close one. One judge scored it a draw and it really could have been one. I had Maldonado winning the first by a good margin and Fedor winning rounds 2 and 3.
It was so strange to see the way Fedor was fighting. He showed a pretty good jab and rather quick punches, decent movement and he was doing good job pushing Maldonado to the side at times to avoid punishment, but that's pretty much all he had. Granted, the first round probably took like 80% of what he had in him, but damn. He kept on wanting to flurry Maldonado when he was covering up, and pretty much only tried to box him during the fight.
He could have used leg kicks. He threw a few and Maldonado had no answer for them. he could have busted his leg and probably would have encountered no resistance doing so, but he barely tried. He never tried to take him down or to mix anything up. The most interesting it got was when he clinched him and threw a few thai knees and looked to do a decent job. Other than that, it was a really sad and one dimensional fight where both fighters just tried the same thing over and over even though it only marginally worked. Maldonado was covering up waiting to load on big punches and looking for the clinch and dirty boxing when Fedor was shaky and Fedor boxed with a low guard (basically his hands down by the third round where he had nothing left). Fedor had some nice dodges and countering, but his defense wa slacking a few times and Maldonado's defense amounted to puting his handes around his head, which, somehow, was usually enough to block the left-right loopy punches flurries.
All in all, really bad fight. Incredible heart display by Fedor, and Maldonado was there the whole fight and could have taken it, but terrible showing for both men.
