I mean, I said I expected a Terunofuji yusho, but the bizarre results of these first two days are making me fear it's going to go to someone completely ridiculous like Terutsuyoshi. The safe bet, of course, is still Shodai or Takakeisho, but, eh.

What is going on with Asanoyama?

Simply he was never as great as the hype made him out to be, in my eyes. The commentators and journalists just want[ed] a Japanese hope.
I don't know if this is a rare opinion or not, but I think Takanoshou could/will make yokozuna. He's been showing very, very grounded sumo.
Kiribayama is disappointing the fuck out of me. A Mongolian doing tsuki sumo? Really? He can use the belt, but it's like he's refusing to do it unless he needs to.

Shoudai yuushou out of nowhere, loved it. I couldn't tell who I wanted to win more, him or Tobizaru. A Tobizaru yuushou would have been more of a shocker, but would feel a little less honest due to the banzuke shape. I know how I feel about Shoudai winning (good), but I still don't know how I feel about Tobizaru losing. Maybe part of it has to do with that horrible, horrible, hideous face he made when he lost. It was like The Scream, but in disappointment. Terunofuji will probably make oozeki again, but it looks like he isn't going to simply rocket back up there.
I maintain my opinion on Takanoshou. He's my huge dark horse. Banzuke people are predicting that he will be placed at west sekiwake next basho - we'll see a lot more of what he can do from there.
...
Asanoyama is exactly what I thought he was.

Nobody wants to talk about oozeki Shoudai?

Let's see how he performs in November
Chris Gould reports that the Yokozuna council is allegedly putting pressure on both Hakuho and Kakuryu. It seems they will also miss this year's last basho.

It seems they will also miss this year's last basho. No way. Kakuryuu can't be that injured. Hakuhou, sure, because he just had surgery and complications are always a possibility, but what in the world has Kakuryuu done to be extra-injured this time around?

I think it's his left elbow

I think it's his left elbow Yes, but he has had the elbow injury for maybe a year or more. It is not so damaged that he cannot use it for sumo, unless that fall against Endou permanently disabled his arm.

I had hoped to see Kakuryuu in this basho, but ugh. He is out. And, in his public comments, he sounds more depressed than you can imagine. His oyakata is dead, they bulldozed the old heya's building yesterday, several of his more substantial injuries are now seemingly permanent, and he mentioned something about feeling physical pain just from putting on a mawashi.

Not happy at all. I was hoping he could get at least a zenso yusho or reaching the rank of Dai Yokozuna.
Hakuho is also out.
I wonder how motivated the rest of the makuuchi division (especially the ozekis) will feel now

Both yokozuna out, Asanoyama out, Shoudai out. This basho... this is not my kind of basho. Even though Terunofuji will almost assuredly win it. Well, maybe he'll get an auto-oozeki promotion if he 15-0s it? Hope, hope.

Has this been Terunofuji style during his career, overpowering his opponents?
