Grappler Baki: an apparent inconsistence in Doppo’s strenght

The title says it all. People say that Doppo managed to push Yujiro to use the demon back, to win, and this would be inconsistent with him losing to Shibukawa and nearly losing to Amanai Yu at the maximum tournament.

The thing is, that isn’t a real inconsistency, because Doppo never managed to really “push” Yujiro to use the demon back. Instead, it was Yujiro who wanted to use the demon back to end things quickly, because he wanted to show to Baki his true strenght.

We can see that in the manga, Orochi Doppo initially managed to stand on his own against Yujiro, using the Maeba stance and the sangan, but as soon as Yujiro slammed his foot on the accelerator, Doppo was in deep trouble.

Now, some people would say that he was already fighting with the demon Back, but that’s not quite true. 

This kissmanga.com/Manga/Grappler-Baki/Vol-007-Ch-060-Read-Online?id=145665#17 is the moment where he showed his true form. And even before showing his true form, as we can see, he was clearly stronger than Doppo as soon as he stepped up his game. 

Yujiro was fully capable of beating Doppo without the Ogre Back, and this is obvious if you think about it, since Yujiro was vastly stronger than both Baki and Jack at the maximum tournament, and they were both vastly stronger than Orochi Doppo. Hell, Retsu Kaioh destroyed  Katsumi in one punch, and Katsumi was on his father’s level, more or less. Not to mention Amanai Yu, who was clear near Doppo’s level.

At the maximum tournament the only one who was somewhat close to the Hanmas (Baki and Jack) was Retsu Kaioh, because Doppo, Shibukawa, Hanayama ecc were clearly inferior. 


This wouldn’t make a lick of sense if Orochi Doppo was so strong that the Ogre couldn’t have won against him without the demon back.

I don't think consistency is something Baki has been characterised for rather than find bigger and bigger sharks to jump.

The power scaling was always kind of consistent (the results tend to change where weapons and -or- surprise attacked entered into the equation, but that it’s understandable), but i get your point.

What i meant, though, was that losing neatly against Shibukawa when you managed to “push” Yujiro to use the demon back wouldn’t have made any sense.

And, in fact, that’s not what happened, Yujiro had fun and played with him but as soon as he decided to take him more seriously he slammed Doppo on the ground breaking one of his fingers in the process, and that was before he actually started to use the Demon Back.

In the anime unfortunately Yujiro doesn’t own Doppo before going Demon Back, so it seems that Doppo was really around “base” Yujiro’s level (which, again, wouldn’t have man any sense whatsoever, since in the maximum tournament -which took place one month later- base Yujiro was unbelievably stronger than both Baki and Jack, and they were both much stronger than Doppo. Not to mention that Doppo had a hard time against Amanai Yu, and to think that Amanai Yu was around base Yujiro’s level -And this would be true, if Doppo actually was strong enough to “push” Yujiro to use the demon Back- would be ridiculous at best).

I don't think even Itagaki knows or understands power-scaling within his own manga. He probably thinks "this would be a cool fight" and just goes from there.

Motobe went from a B-grade fighter (who lost convincingly to a sumo wrestler) to somebody who defeated Musashi while he was equipped with swords. Sure, he shined briefly in New Grappler Baki when he was equipped with weapons, but that doesn't explain his massive power jump in Baki Dou.

In Baki Dou, Motobe defeated Jack Hanma, who pushed Baki to the point of using his demon back. And he was able to tank his attacks because of armor, and grapple with him equally. I guess because he had "weapons" and "armor" it made all the difference? It doesn't make sense.  Jack Hanma was supposed be to insanely strong. This spear did nothing to his chest.

We can say for sure that Itagaki is an odd one, and not a fan of consistency. We love him and his crazy manga.

Yeah, plus, back when the Doppo fight happened, I think Itagaki had no idea he'd end up making Yujiro so overpowered he could destroy the underground arena with one punch.

Plus, who's to say Yujiro didn't get a lot stronger himself over the course of the manga ?

I actually remember one of the characters (was it Baki or Strydum ?) mentionning in one of the past books of the serie that Yujiro was constantly getting stronger and stronger.

The only consistency in regards to power level in the Baki series is Yujiro > all .

Everything else depends on Itagaki opinion regarding the "that fight should be cool" concept, or there would be no way Musashi vs Motobe would have even be considered as a fight if you remember all that Itagaki setup for Musashi before that fight (brain functionning faster than everybody, speed superior to any grappler and all the other overpowered bullcrap) .

Baki says it in volume 5 of Grappler Baki. 1992. Itagaki made it clear very early that Yuujiro was to be the finalest of final bosses.
