What a sad new, Toriyama was one of the first manga authors i ever knew when "paper" manga started to land in my country thanks to import from Japan.
The funny stuff is that we were only looking at the pictures of those manga we imported at the time, fortunately the manga specific style has always been detailled enough in panel sequencing (unlike european or american comics that often have 2 or 3 pages to present an event or an action while manga had dozens of them for a similar event/action) that not knowing the language has never been an issue to understanding mostly what was going on.
Anyways, Toriyama's Dragon Ball has been a truly massive door opener to the manga invasion worldwide and that's probably one of the manga author that was the most known outside Japan for a long time (very helped by the animated series too, but the "paper" manga was probably one of the most successful along Otomo's Akira when manga started to get translated). I can't even imagine the impact Toriyama had on other manga authors and how many young people became later manga artists after growing up with Toriyama's work, him passing away must have been a big new in the manga world, very likely on the level of Tezuka passing away...
I pray he's at peace in a better world.
