Agree, that came out of nowhere.
To be honest, this kind of stories which are so hyped between the fandom are really hard to stick on their landing. This made me shrug a bit, but have read much worse that this.

Yeah, there were a lot of barely coherent stuff being thrown in the second half of the story, with a truckload of characters who all have different and vague motivations, making the whole thing needlessly confusing.
Still, seeing how wild things had gotten, this might be as good an ending as we can get. The character writing is honestly a bit lacking. It somewhat holds up because most of those characters were nicely developped in the first half, but, for example, I'm a bit skeptical at how everyone in the main cast is A-okay with Eren deciding to kill 80% of the world as long as that means he considered them his friends. It also does seem like the last two chapters were a little rushed, but nothing horrible either. Now, to be faire, SnK was always a bit sketchy story wise. The author probably bit off a bit more than he could chew with this wild expansion of the world in the second half.
And still, though, even with all those faults, that battle on a giant skeleton in the clouds was pretty goddamn metal. That's some serious inventivity and awesome imagery right there.

The ending was predictable, but I'm mostly content with it.
