It is aesthetics, it's like this thing about megaloboxing being so violent they use robot arms and no protection, and also Joe being a revolutionary because he fights without gear in a tournament designed to sell Yoko's robot arms. But then, nobody actually seems to get hurt that badly in those fights (except the guys ex military dude fights because he deliberately tries to hurt them), and Joe himself, who's been making a living out of getting KO'd by robot arms seems pretty fine. Then, he just fights without it and does just fine, which is symbolic but really doesn't make sense unless we accept that he's just miles ahead of the competition in technique, footwork and tactics... but I'm kinda not feeling it that much, honestly. All we know is he was too good for the underground chump circuit, which... honestly doesn't mean much as far as I'm concerned. How did he learn boxing, was he always that good ? There'll probably be some flashback down the line to show that, but it's something I'd have liked to know beforehand, to establish that he was that good. Right now, the feeling I have isn't "Wow Joe, is such a brilliant boxer he can beat guys who use gear" but "Wow, those boxers actually kind of suck and so does their gears if a guy who's spent his career being a punching bag for chumps can just wreck them without gear"

No, this frame at the beginning doesn't come across as a spoiler at all Did you seriously not knew that the legs would be his downfall -har har har- since he was introduced? So, how many fights more? 4? The 5th from Joe to get 1st in the ranking, then 1 for each pairing in Megalonia, which makes 2 and the finals? Considering there are 7 episodes left it can check out.

Did you seriously not knew that the legs would be his downfall -har har har- since he was introduced? I got that much. It was just so very sad that they didn't even try to think through what they'd use as bumpers for the program.

To be fair, I expected Joe's punch to be so strong it would make him be deattached from his prosthetic legs (not really).
Dunno, I hear what you are saying and I'd prefer a proper remake of AnJ, but for what it is it's... fine? Good character building, a lot of show, don't tell regarding their feelings and how they react to each other (which they original excelled at), dynamic choreography and animation (dragged by the choice of trying to make it look old when there wasn't a need for it)...
It is not maybe as good as it could have been, but it is for me some of the most entertaining anime this season. This coming from a season with Golden Kamuy or Hinamatsuri ir example, which are damn satisfying on their own ways. I actually have like 14 anime to follow this time and that hasn't happened ever to me. And this one is one of the few I actually try to keep up to date.
Plus that opening... it's raining wild dogs, yo!

Some people seem to love this anime, while some seem to hate it. Personally, I'm in the middle. I see nothing extraordinary about it, and I think it suffers from the comparison with AnJ, but at the same time, it is a perfectly fine anime. I have no idea what other anime is airing this year, though. I usually stumble upon anime like a year after it aired, for the recent ones.

This was a suprising episode, but now I fully expect this new guy to provide the gear for Joe when he gets into Megalonia.

So only 4 chapoters left, 4 fights remaining: Mikio vs Joe, Pepe vs Yuri, Joe vs Glen and the final match Joe vs Yuri, so I wonder how they will be set up, maybe they can fit Mikio vs Joe and Pepe Vs Yuri in the same chapter to leave more space for the others, but that might be too fast? I'm really confused by the pacing of this series.

Yeah, I don't like how short and fast this anime is going. I like how it has its own unique identity but at the same time, we know very little about Joe and the rest of the cast. www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAO1IMrqXp8However, I'd like to make an AMV of Megalobox to Votoms' theme song. I still get a vibe of Votoms from this series.

I think the anime plays a bit with the fact its main audience will know AnJ and how to extrapolate/find parallels with the original characters. Still my wife has no clue about the original and is enjoying the ambience and character interaction, so it must be doing something good even as its own product.

I'm honestly not really finding many parallels except that some characters are supposed to be some other characters. But for example, I don't think it's interesting to pick one of the kids from the manga as a kid sidekick. I don't find him to be very compelling. I would have rather had Nishi or Noriko fill that role.
The army dude could be likened to Kim as they both are soldiers, and have PTSD, although they have pretty much nothing in common aside from that. That's about it. But the things the anime adds that have nothing to do with the manga are not bad. Yoko's brother is not a great character, but he's interesting enough. The army dude was a decent arc, I thought with his relationship with Dampei.
Yeah, I can't say I have much enthusiasm for the show given what it measures up to, but I can't honestly say it's not good, just kinda predictable in a bad way at times, and generally uninvolving. If only the main character was compelling, it would help a lot, but that Joe is boring as hell. I mean, Dampei is pretty good, Yoko doesn't get much screen time, but she's intriguing, but Joe ? I don't really see how he could be a more average protagonist. He's missing all of the original character's bad traits that actually made him interesting and weird. Hell, he barely ever gets angry.

Well nobody talking anymore, last chapter was... weird, we all knew Joe was not going to throw the fight, and I was kind of expecting for Shirato to interfere with the mafia business and Nambu... oh well, I hope the final chapter with the fight is good enough.

Well, yeah, last episode was pretty much everything we expected. I didn't know if Joe would be going along with the con, but eventually, he fought for real. I just have a hard time imagining that mafia dude would be content with taking Nanbu's eye. I mean, I remember him being only barely ambiguous that he'd murder all of them for not going along with his plan.
