By pure coincidence, last night, I was having an engaged conversation about how successful television writers go out of their way to avoid creating episodes like this. What made matters worse was the Greek chorus-thing at the end. That's every professional television/play writer's absolute last resort.

At this point, it feels like barely any thought was put into this anime.

An interview with the director of the anime: www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/2018/06/15-1/interview-megalobox-director-yo-moriyamaThe anime seemed ok, I do not think it deserves the great praises that I saw that it received in many places, but it was not a garbage either. I feel that if they had a larger number of chapters they would have been able to make most interesting fights and not end the vast majority with Joe giving a one-punch win.

What...
I wasn't expecting that really, wasn't bad though, the chapter, the fight was as disappointing as all the others except the very first one.

Welp, that whole series was just a big ball of underwhelming. Not terrible, not even bad, it's all pretty fine, but man is it unmemorable.

I would have preferred to be left with the uncertainty of who won the final instead of being told after the final credits.

One of the series' biggest problem is we barely get to know any of the characters. Nanbu is probably the best one because he's complex and gets enough screen time and gets hurt the most in a lasting way (Yuri gets hurt, but that almost felt like a requirement to mirror the manga). Most boxers Joe fights, except for military dude, Yuko's brother and Yuri are barely and afterthought. Yuri and Joe's rivalry means nothing because they have basically no history together and we know close to nothing about either of them.
Joe himself is such a weird main character. He's like an awkward mix between the manga's Joe and your average anime male lead with the minimum amount of personality to let people identify. Maybe he's supposed to be mysterious with no past ans shit, but nobody ever cares who he is anyway. It doesn't work, I feel we get a muted version of Joe. The whole anime feels remote. It's like nothing really matter.

For a series with such limitations as the number of chapters and the budget, and being a ovel director, it was pretty damn great. WOuld have been hard to expand on lesser characters better than wat was already shown. Yuuri and Nambu got the best development and Joe was just what he needed to be to carry the show, a good for nothing from the lower of the lowest (a non-.citizen throwing off fights on an illegal arena) who clawed to the top with sheer guts alone.
After having seen the last episode once more and giving it some thought, the ending was pretty great even if it wasn't flashy. These characters have to keep on living with the consequences of their decisions and actions, and that has some heavy weight.
Still I would have liked to have some better / more interesting fights and the geear gimmick to have been more relevant, like pointing out that Joe's coutner were stringer because of the extra force added by the gear of the opponent or some other shit.

So I somehow managed to finish this. Kept hoping it would get better towards the end but the whole show felt like a huge waste of time. Really boring all around.

What the heck ? Well, who knows, now that they've gone completely off tracks with the first season, maybe the second one will have more of an identity ? Why is Joe wearing a gear again, though ?

I'm guessing it takes influence from when Joe goes off the reservation as he tries to overcome Rikiishi's death?

The intentional destruction of the quality of the visuals continues to hurt me.
